It’s pretty clear from the look on Eric’s face that the something he has to tell me isn’t going to be some sort of romantic fairy tale ending. Not that I even want that from him but, well, you know.

“What is it?” I ask, putting a smile onto my face hoping to lighten things up.

But his blue eyes are gray and his expression looks almost…apologetic. “Nothing…” Eric says slowly, drawing out the word. “Nothing can happen between us. I mean, aside from the whole you being my muse thing. Obviously, I need that. But nothing with either of us having any kind of real feelings or anything. We can’t get…involved. At all.”

I swallow and draw back, forcing a painfully awkward laugh as I wave a hand. “I mean, of course. Obviously.” I shrug and shake my head, trying my best to make it seem like he’s just reiterating what I already know. Which he is.

I feel a pang of embarrassment at the idea of him seeing me catching feelings. And an even bigger pang of embarrassment at him trying to stop it.

“Eric, it’s not like that. I’m completely aware that nothing is ever going to happen between us. I’m not an idiot, okay? I know you would never actually go for someone like me.”

His eyes flash and he frowns a little, looking confused. “What? No. That’s not what I said.”

“You said nothing can happen, and I get it. You don’t want me thinking this is some sort of love story and getting my feelings hurt. And you’re right. It’s not. I’m cool, I promise.”

“Cici, that’s not why I said that. It’s not true that I would never go for a girl like you.”

I level my gaze with his and raise a brow. “Eric. Come on.”

“Cici, listen.” He sighs noisily and takes another sip from his glass of whiskey. “My agent met with management of the South Florida Fire today. This whole ‘no girls’ thing is a really big deal. Having any kind of relationship whatsoever could end my career.”

I furrow my brow, shaking my head as I try to process this. “Really? I mean, I know your agent said it was in your best interest to lay low on social media and not have a different model on your arm every month or whatever. That’s why we’ve been so secret. But…your baseball career could end over it? Actually?”

Eric runs a hand through his dirty-blond hair, letting it flop all over his forehead. “Apparently, this has happened with athletes before when they move to Miami, because there’s a party culture here and it’s sort of just this certain lifestyle. If they feel like I can’t focus one hundred percent of my attention on baseball, they’re gonna be done with me. Because they think that’s why I’ve struggled so much this season.”

“Is it?” I shift my legs underneath me and study him. “Is it why you’ve struggled so much this season?”

Eric swirls his glass and turns to the side, revealing his chiseled profile as he ponders the question.
